Make a Joyful Noise

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!” Psalm 98:4. This was the theme verse for this year’s National Lutheran Schools Week. This week was certainly joyful. I am thankful we can all slow down this upcoming week during Spring Break. When you’re with your children this break, continue daily family devotions and sing with your children. The Lord knows singing a joyful noise does not always mean it will be on pitch. The Lord does not care; all songs sung to the Lord are beautiful in His hearing. We do our best to practice so that we can bring glory to God. If you have never been to a Grace Lutheran School morning chapel service, I encourage you to come and experience it. The students sing beautiful melodies to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Every chapel, the Lord sustains me through His Word and encourages me through the students’ singing.

Why should we sing? As we read in Psalm 98:4, God tells us to sing! We sing because of what God has done for us.

We have such examples in the Bible as the Israelites, when they crossed the Red Sea and God saved them from Pharaoh’s army, they stopped and sang, “Sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted. Both horse and driver He has hurled into the sea.” Exodus 15:21.

It may not seem we have such a dramatic event in our lives to sing about, but in this Lenten season, we remember all that Jesus bore for us on His journey to the cross. Good Friday is good because in His death, He defeated sin and death. On Easter Sunday, we have joy because Christ is risen and so, we too, shall rise. That is something to sing about! When that crafty devil comes and attacks us daily, we can sing God’s Word through the hymns of the church. There are hymns for all seasons of the church and all seasons of our lives. The Scriptures teach us that when we are in heaven, we will be praising the Lord without end. We look forward to that day. Until then, let us sing for joy, knowing that our Redeemer has won the victory!

“Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” Psalm 95:1.

In Christ,

Pastor Schuller
